PET compared to glass packaging for deuterium-depleted water

PET plastic versus glass bottles for deuterium-depleted water packaging comparison

We are often asked why we choose PET over glass to package Yavelle deuterium-depleted water. The simple answer is cost and practicality. Below, we will explain in more detail.

Glass versus PET plastic water bottles side by side showing weight and packaging difference for deuterium-depleted water shipping

Shipping cost of glass bottles

In our modern world, shipping has become a major cost to all product-based businesses. This is a particularly large issue with a product like water, which is both heavy and bulky.

Water is sold by the litre, so freight is a real part of what a customer ends up paying. With a cheaper water, the cost of shipping can end up higher than the cost of the water itself.

Glass adds a great deal of weight per litre shipped. On this basis, Yavelle decided to package our standard range in PET only.

Where our water is made

Yavelle deuterium-depleted water is made in the USA. To the best of our knowledge there is no deuterium depletion facility in Australia, so all DDW sold here is manufactured overseas. That distance is part of why packaging weight matters as much as it does to us: every extra gram of packaging is a gram carried across the Pacific before it reaches an Australian doorstep.

Glass breakage during shipping

Unfortunately, this is a common issue when shipping boxes of glass bottles. A broken bottle on arrival is a disappointing way to receive an order.

The cost of that breakage has to be absorbed somewhere. It is usually not charged to the customer directly, but it is carried by the business and shows up eventually in the price of the product.

This durability also benefits consumers who are less likely to experience a breakage when using the bottles at home or in locations like the gym.

Recycling and energy costs

In today's environmentally conscious market, the recyclability of packaging materials is very important. PET containers are widely recycled and can be repurposed for various applications. Glass is also recyclable.

Another consideration is the energy cost associated with producing glass. The manufacturing process for glass involves melting raw materials at extremely high temperatures, which requires a significant amount of energy. This increases production costs.

Do plastic or glass affect the deuterium content of the water?

Neither bottle affects the deuterium content of the water. The deuterium content of sealed water does not change over time, with temperature, or with the packaging it is held in.
